9 Signs of a Second Spiritual Awakening: When Awakening Becomes Embodiment

By Lindsay Goodwin, The Consciousness Medium™ & Founder of The High Frequency Mind™

The following nine signs may reveal that you are entering a second spiritual awakening—one centered less on spiritual discovery and more on integration, discernment, and embodiment.

But awakening does not always happen once. Many people reach a point years after their initial awakening when the beliefs, practices, and spiritual language that once felt transformative no longer feel complete. Life begins asking something deeper of them. They are no longer being invited simply to discover consciousness. They are being asked to live from it.

This experience is sometimes described as a second spiritual awakening.

A second spiritual awakening is a deeper phase of consciousness in which previously hidden patterns, identities, emotional responses, and spiritual attachments become visible. While an initial awakening may reveal that there is more to life than the physical world or conditioned identity, the second awakening often reveals what still stands between that realization and the way you actually live.

It is less about discovering the light and more about becoming honest about everything within you that has not yet learned to embody it.

What Is a Second Spiritual Awakening?

A second spiritual awakening is not an official spiritual stage that every person must experience. Awakening is rarely a neat or predictable progression. It moves through cycles of realization, disruption, integration, expansion, and return.

The phrase describes the experience of entering a deeper level of self-awareness after already having undergone a meaningful spiritual awakening.

Your first awakening may have opened your perception. You may have begun questioning the nature of reality, noticing synchronicities, developing your intuition, or recognizing how deeply conditioning shaped your identity. You may also have begun exploring what awareness actually means and how it differs from conditioning. The second awakening often brings those realizations into the body and daily life.

You may intellectually understand that you are not your thoughts, yet still find yourself controlled by them. You may believe in following your intuition, yet recognize that fear still makes many of your decisions. You may understand the importance of authenticity while continuing to perform an identity that no longer feels true.

The next phase begins when awareness turns toward these contradictions—not to punish you, but to bring you into greater internal alignment.

Why Can Spiritual Awakening Happen More Than Once?

Consciousness is not a final destination. There is always another layer of perception available because you are continually meeting life through new experiences, relationships, challenges, and levels of self-awareness.

An initial awakening can be expansive. You may suddenly perceive meaning and connection everywhere. You feel awakened to an aspect of reality you did not previously recognize.

Over time, however, even spiritual understanding can become another identity. You can become attached to being intuitive, awakened, conscious, empathic, chosen, or different from the people around you. These identities may initially support your transformation, but eventually they can become another structure through which the mind attempts to define and protect itself.

A second awakening can dismantle that structure.

It may ask:

Who are you when you no longer need to identify as awakened?

Can you trust your inner knowing without needing constant confirmation?

Can you remain present when life contradicts what you expected?

Can your spirituality exist within your relationships, decisions, body, work, boundaries, and everyday human experience?

This is where awakening begins to become embodiment.

9 Signs of a Second Spiritual Awakening

1. Your Former Spiritual Identity No Longer Fits

One of the clearest signs of a second spiritual awakening is that the spiritual identity you developed during your first awakening begins to feel limiting.

Practices that once brought profound insight may suddenly feel mechanical. Teachers you once followed may no longer resonate. Language that helped explain your experience may begin to feel too narrow.

This does not necessarily mean those practices or teachings were wrong. They may have carried you through an essential stage of your evolution. But consciousness may now be asking you to move beyond borrowed explanations and into direct inner knowing.

You are not losing your connection. You may be releasing the identity you constructed around it.

2. You Begin Recognizing Deeper Subconscious Patterns

The first awakening may show you that conditioning exists. A second awakening frequently shows you precisely how that conditioning is still operating within you.

You may begin noticing repeating relationship dynamics, emotional triggers, patterns of over-responsibility, fear of rejection, self-abandonment, people-pleasing, or the need to control what happens next.

This can feel like a subconscious awakening because patterns that previously operated outside your awareness become increasingly visible. Understanding why subconscious patterns keep repeating can help you recognize that these cycles are not evidence that you have failed to evolve. They are patterns that have finally entered the light of your awareness.

Recognition is important, but recognition alone does not immediately dissolve a pattern. Awareness creates the space in which a different response becomes possible. Each time you witness the pattern without automatically becoming it, you loosen its authority over your life.

3. Your Outer Life No Longer Reflects Your Inner Awareness

You may feel a growing distance between who you know yourself to be and the life you have built.

Your work may no longer express your values. Certain relationships may depend upon an older version of you. The way you spend your energy may conflict with what your inner knowing has been communicating.

This is often the point when your old life stops fitting. The discomfort can become difficult to ignore because you can no longer unknow what your consciousness has revealed.

This misalignment is not always a command to abandon everything. It may be an invitation to examine where your choices continue to arise from fear, conditioning, or obligation rather than conscious alignment.

A second spiritual awakening asks you to bring your awareness into form. Your choices become the place where your consciousness is revealed.

4. You Enter a Hermit Phase

A desire for solitude often accompanies a deeper awakening. You may feel less interested in noise, performance, superficial conversation, or remaining constantly available to others.

This is sometimes called the hermit phase of spiritual awakening.

Solitude can create the space needed to hear what has been obscured by external expectations. You may need time to determine which beliefs are truly yours, which relationships are mutually nourishing, and which direction genuinely feels aligned.

This phase is not necessarily about withdrawing permanently. Its purpose may be to help you return to the world without abandoning yourself within it.

Healthy solitude creates clarity. Complete isolation driven by fear may require a different kind of attention and support.

5. Synchronicities Become Less Important Than Self-Trust

During an initial awakening, repeating numbers, dreams, signs, and synchronicities may feel especially significant. They can affirm that reality is more interconnected than you previously understood.

During a second awakening, you may stop needing constant external signs.

Rather than repeatedly asking the universe to confirm your direction, you begin strengthening your capacity to recognize what you already know.

This does not mean synchronicities disappear or become meaningless. They simply stop replacing discernment. You recognize that a sign cannot make a decision for you, override another person’s autonomy, or remove the uncertainty inherent in being human.

Your intuition becomes quieter, steadier, and less dependent upon spectacle.

6. Your Nervous System Becomes Part of Your Spiritual Awareness

A deeper awakening often brings attention back to the body.

You may recognize that not every intense sensation is intuition and not every state of expansion means you are aligned. Anxiety, hypervigilance, conditioned fear, intuition, excitement, and emotional activation can sometimes feel similar.

This is why nervous-system awareness becomes an essential part of spiritual discernment.

The body is not an obstacle you must transcend to become conscious. It is part of the human experience through which consciousness is being expressed.

You begin learning the difference between an inner knowing that remains steady and an urgent reaction that demands immediate relief. This creates a more embodied relationship with intuition—one that includes the body without allowing every sensation to dictate meaning.

7. Certainty Gives Way to Curiosity

Early spiritual awakening can bring powerful realizations. Because these insights feel so clear, it is easy to turn them into certainty about how reality works.

A deeper awakening reveals the limits of what you know.

You become more comfortable saying, “I do not know.” You develop the capacity to explore an experience without immediately defining it. You can hold spiritual meaning and practical reality at the same time.

This is not a loss of wisdom. It is the emergence of discernment.

Curiosity allows consciousness to remain open. Certainty can close perception around the explanation the mind already prefers.

8. Relationships Reveal Where You Still Abandon Yourself

Relationships are often where spiritual awareness becomes most tangible.

You may feel centered and conscious while alone, yet return to automatic reactions when you feel dismissed, misunderstood, rejected, controlled, or responsible for someone else’s emotions.

A second spiritual awakening can expose where you confuse compassion with self-abandonment or connection with self-sacrifice. It may reveal where you silence your intuition to preserve belonging.

The invitation is not to become detached or spiritually superior. It is to remain connected to yourself while in connection with another person.

Boundaries, honest communication, accountability, and the willingness to observe your own reactions can become profound practices of consciousness.

This is also where you may begin questioning whether you are truly living from your own awareness or unconsciously performing the identity others expect. Exploring how conditioning shapes the life you are living can help illuminate this distinction.

9. You Feel Called to Embody What You Know

The defining movement of a second spiritual awakening is the shift from understanding consciousness to living consciously.

You may no longer be satisfied by collecting spiritual information. You want your awareness to change the way you speak, lead, choose, create, work, relate, and respond.

This is inner-frequency embodiment: your internal state and external life becoming increasingly coherent.

Embodiment does not mean remaining calm, positive, or spiritually elevated at all times. It means noticing when you leave your center and becoming capable of returning. It means taking responsibility for the energy, beliefs, and patterns you bring into your life without turning personal responsibility into self-blame.

Your consciousness becomes visible through how you participate in being human.

Is a Second Spiritual Awakening More Difficult Than the First?

It can feel more confronting because it often reaches beneath your spiritual understanding and into the identities protecting your deepest patterns.

The first awakening may contain moments of exhilaration, connection, and expanded possibility. The second may feel quieter. It may involve disillusionment, uncertainty, solitude, or the recognition that spiritual awareness has not exempted you from human vulnerability.

But this phase is not a spiritual failure.

It can be a movement away from performing consciousness and toward inhabiting it. You are learning that awakening is not measured by how much spiritual knowledge you possess. It is reflected in the quality of awareness you bring to what is actually happening.

You can also explore the six phases of spiritual awakening to understand how awakening may move through different cycles of realization, disruption, reflection, and integration.

How to Navigate a Second Spiritual Awakening

You do not need to force this phase or attempt to complete it as quickly as possible. The desire to “finish” awakening can become another strategy of control.

Instead, begin observing what life is currently showing you.

Notice the situations that repeatedly activate you. Pay attention to where you seek external permission even though your inner knowing is already clear. Observe the identities you feel compelled to defend. Become curious about the difference between intuition and urgency.

Create periods of silence without making isolation your permanent home. Let your body participate in your awareness through rest, breath, movement, nourishment, and nervous-system regulation.

You can also ask yourself:

  • What part of my identity no longer feels true?

  • Where am I waiting for external confirmation?

  • Which patterns continue to repeat even though I understand them?

  • What does my inner knowing communicate when fear becomes quiet?

  • What would it mean to embody what I already know?

  • Where am I being invited into greater self-trust?

  • What is trying to emerge through this phase of my life?

Seek meaningful support when you need another perspective, especially when your experience begins affecting your ability to function, remain connected, or understand what is happening.

Most importantly, allow your understanding of awakening to evolve.

You are not required to remain the person you became during your first spiritual awakening. That version of you may have been the bridge, not the destination.

The Deeper Meaning of a Second Awakening

A second spiritual awakening is not necessarily an initiation into a more spiritually advanced identity. It may be the dissolution of the need for such an identity altogether.

It can return you to something simpler and more honest: awareness itself.

You begin to recognize thoughts without accepting each one as truth. You feel emotions without allowing every feeling to define reality. You listen to intuition without demanding absolute certainty. You experience your humanity without viewing it as evidence that you have fallen out of alignment.

This is the movement from spiritual awakening into self-mastery.

The deeper awakening is not an escape from your human experience. It is an invitation to meet that experience with greater consciousness, responsibility, curiosity, and inner trust.

Perhaps you are not awakening for a second time because the first awakening failed. Perhaps you are being invited into the next expression of what it revealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have a second spiritual awakening?

Yes. Spiritual awakening can unfold through multiple cycles rather than one defining event. A second spiritual awakening often involves a deeper recognition of subconscious patterns, identity attachments, relationship dynamics, and the difference between understanding consciousness and embodying it.

What are the signs of a second spiritual awakening?

Common signs include outgrowing a former spiritual identity, recognizing deeper subconscious patterns, craving solitude, questioning previous beliefs, needing fewer external signs, experiencing changes in relationships, and feeling called to live in greater alignment with your awareness.

Is the second spiritual awakening harder than the first?

A second awakening can feel more confronting because it may expose patterns that remained hidden beneath spiritual knowledge. The experience can involve uncertainty or disillusionment, but it can also lead to stronger self-trust, discernment, and embodiment.

What is a subconscious awakening?

A subconscious awakening occurs when previously unconscious beliefs, emotional responses, protective behaviors, and conditioned patterns become visible. This awareness creates the possibility of responding consciously instead of automatically repeating the same patterns.

What is the hermit phase of spiritual awakening?

The hermit phase is a period in which someone feels drawn toward solitude, reflection, and reduced external stimulation. It may provide space to examine beliefs, hear inner guidance, and release external expectations. It does not necessarily mean permanently withdrawing from relationships or society.

How long does a second spiritual awakening last?

There is no universal timeline. A second spiritual awakening may unfold through distinct moments or as a gradual process lasting months or years. Its progression depends upon the person, the circumstances surrounding the awakening, the patterns being revealed, and how integration occurs.
